- Susano
- Japanese sea and storm god. His name may be translated as ‘Impetuous’ or may possibly derive from the town of Susa where he had a shrine. He was the son of Izanagi and Izanami and the brother of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, by whom he begat eight children. He was also a moon god and there is a myth of his having driven his sister, the sun, into ‘the cave of the heavens’, leaving the world for some considerable period in darkness. This story, which is of much earlier origin than either Susano or Amaterasu, is probably a memory of some early cosmic disaster of great magnitude. He has also been identified with Kompira.
